Installation/Performance, Ableton Loop 2017
“Hayhurst was experimenting with tape loops and samplers, Sutherland, meanwhile, was creating kaleidoscopic projected animations by printing patterns and images onto vinyl records and setting them to spin. The two decided to play a gig together without rehearsing anything, and let simultaneity do its work. The result was so good that they’ve been doing it ever since; Hayhurst weaving dense webs of sound from nth-generation samples, Sutherland beaming pop-art fever-dreams and swirling spirals of color onto the walls from cameras mounted on his turntable. They’ve made records and videos, but see these for the most part as ‘industrial byproducts’ of their practice, which is best understood by watching them at work. This year, Sculpture bring their Polymedia Studio to Loop, and invite you to do just that. Over three days, the duo will combine and recombine their vast library of loops and discs, conducting an extended experiment in perceptual and emotional stimulation”.
